Clay Sculpture – work in progress – September 2020

These works were started in the spring of 2020, when covid began. I didn’t mind the seclusion, being naturally inclined that way.

Background

I had about 150 pounds of Plainsman red and 100 pounds of white clay that I gathered over the past twenty years, beginning with my time in Redcliff Alberta. I loved working with clay, but with such a long time in storage, the clay had dried up.

Rehydrated

In 2019, I tackled the job of rehydrating the clay. It took awhile as I first had to add water to the bags, and then let them sit for about a month. In the summer of 2019, each tiny bit of clay passed through my fingers to distribute the moisture evenly. I then wedged until my arms fell off and I felt they were ready to be stored once again. Double bagged, and they all waited for me until the spring of 2020.

Wedged and formed

What you see below is approximately 150 pounds of red clay, M375 and M390 slam wedged and formed. It is now September 20, and I am waiting for the final three sculptures to dry before I take them to be fired. Once they are fired, the next stage of their evolution will begin. I am starting on the grey clay shortly.
